Just a reminder to all barefoot walkers. Keep your tetanus booster shots up to date. Every 10 years or so.

I cut my foot on a piece of rusty metal the other day and had to go get a few stitches and a tetanus shot.

Just a reminer to all humans, barefoot walkers or not. Keep your tetanus booster shots up to date. Every 10 years or so.

You can cut your hand, arm, leg, or any other body part on a piece of rusty metal.

"You can cut your hand, arm, leg, or any other body part on a piece of rusty metal."

My girlfriend nagged me last weekend because I was mowing the lawn barefoot. It's a push mower for god's sake, I'd have to be an acrobat to get my foot in there before the blades stopped moving.

Maybe I should start a "Barefoot Mowers" tribe.

If you cut your hand, arm leg or whatever you also need the tetanus booster shot :)

It should be remembered that tetanus is not actually transmitted by rust, but that the primary carrier of tetanus is fecal matter. It also will like in soil, particularly rich, humusy soil. Rusty metal, particularly the so dreaded "rusty nail" is only dangerous because the jagged edges are more likely to have dirt and feces caked on them, and to leave more ragged cuts and puncture wounds, which are harder to clean out, and more easily introduce the infectious agents deeply. If you keep your wounds well washed and cleared, get all the dirt out, and disinfect them, then the tetanus shot is not completely necessary. I have been unimmunized, and have certainly had my fair share of encounters with rusty objects. Also, the rusty object is not necessary for tetanus infection, this should be remembered too. you could slice yourself on a sharp piece of clean plastic and still get tetanus by getting dirt in the cut. So take care of your wounds and then don't worry.

In the whole entire human history of barefoot walking who really worried about something as suddenly fashionable as tetanus shots? Let's look into the modern barefooter's gadget bag. Hmm. Well theres Tinactin, Dr. Scholls foot cream, nail clipper, bunyon remover, dr's number for that tetanus shot, witch hazel for poison oak, bactine for scrapes, athletic bandages for spranes, and last but not least the current best seller "Care and Feeding of Hypocondriatic Barefoot walkers".

Thats good that you couldnt find a copy because that means that most of us barefoot walkers don't puss out when barefootin. We just do it as earth grounded people and not as hypocondriacs.
