Well guys, time's approaching and I'm looking forward to put my feet on australian soil, walk though sidney and all the coast up to Brisbane. The less shoes the better ;-) the more black soles the better...
Is anyone in the sidney or Brisbane area with barefoot experience for some hints, dos or don'ts ? Maybe for a spontaeous meeting?

    Hey Roberto,

I've lived in both Sydney and Brisbane over the last 15 years or so.

Just been looking back through this thread. Firstly barefooting in Oz is common enough that no one will pay that much attention, though you might see only 2-3 barefoot people per day in the CBD. You will see more at weekends. In the suburbs you will see lots more.

There are a lot of nasty biteys over here but if you keep your eyes open you won't have any problems. I do a lot of barefoot bush-walking and any snakes I see are heading in the opposite direction as fast as they can. Having said that I have had a snake go between my bare feet!

In the cities just do it, no one will care. You will have no problem shopping, on public transport, in fast food joints or at most tourist attractions - except for 'hazardous' venues like The Bridge Climb. You probably won't get into decent restaurants, clubs or pubs especially in the evening - look for the bouncers!

It's starting to warm up here now so the ground can get pretty hot if you're not used to it - be prepared.

    any questions, just ask.

    cheers

    Greg

      Hi Greg

Thanks a lot for your reply. In fact I'm looking forward for this trip. And if AUS is as barefoot-friendly as you mentioned the better :)

In fact, the only thing that concerns me most is the biteys. If I can avoid any closer encounter with them it'll be better. Mainly I'll move in the coastal area without too much bush-walking. In any case I'll carry a pair of shoes with me :). I hope not to have too many problems with spiders or snakes in the cities (or should I worry).

Thanks very much for your reply.
      cheers

        Hi Roberto,

as a tourist the chances of seeing a snake or dangerous spider are really pretty remote. They do live in our towns and cities - hey they were here first, but unless you plan on doing some gardening or clearing out someones garden shed you'll be fine!

If you go bush-walking just be aware that there may be snakes about, and don't walk barefoot where you can't see. Avoid long grass, deep leaf litter etc.

        enjoy your visit

        cheers

        Greg
