The harsh reality has set in with the snow, I find myself putting on big boots and thick socks. The floors themselves reflect the time of year and bite any bare foot that dare touch them. I love the snow, but I miss the summer days running barefoot through the forest.

New Year's Day, 2006--rain and 50-70 MPH winds. The pavement was wet and covered with fallen leaves. The air temperature was about 60F. The barefoot walk went well. Though the sky was gray, the season brought joy.

for as long as i can remember in my past shod life i suffered from unbearably cold feet all winter long, even my beloved thick wooly socks failed to completely warm me. last winter, after my first few months of dedicated barefootedness, i capitulated to the cold and took to wearing my fleecy sheepskin slippers everywhere rather than put on a pair of real shoes. found out why they're called slippers: goddam' totally inapropriate for walking on wet surfaces and i took several exhilerating, magical slides across the pavement ending up flat on my ass on hard wet surfaces in full public view. this winter i've been [mostly] sticking to hardcore shoelessness. i get a lot of folks asking in amazement if my feet aren't cold and i'm happy to reply in the negative. i figure a year and a half of freedom has improved the circulation in my feet so much that they can now withstand the temperatures and in fact they get nice and rosy-hued when the weather is chill. also much more secure footing, nothing beats a good toe grip on those slippery when wet surfaces.

      take care-

I used to wear very little on my feet during the winter, as did a friend of mine, until she almost lost half her toes on her right foot to frostbite. So we all wear shoes, and multiple pairs of socks here.

But I did escape for a while. For four days surrounding new years I ran around bare foot in the woods of southern Georgia. When I got back to Atlanta I just carried a pair of sandals in my purse so I could go into places requiring foot apparal.

My feet feel so confined now.
