Barefoot Wannabe...

Greetings barefooters!
Its about 0 degrees today in Boulder, CO, but I've determined that barefooting it is something I want and need to do. Somehow I just can't bring myself to bare my tootsies for more than about 60 seconds in this weather. We've been practicing walking barefoot in the snow a bit, but that is hardly anything in the world of barefoot.
I've done some barefoot walking in the woods, and my virgin barefoot experience including walking up a very steep, very stoney hill in the dark with a full backpack on. I was mostly too lazy to put wet shoes back on after crossing and swimming in the river at dusk...so i just huffed it. But it really hurt. Some part of me still fears the teeth and spines of the desert where I used to live( anyone around here from southern az and barefoot?) It's not so much my skin and toes that ache, but the tendons and joints when I've tried it for any length of time.

Got any tips for a newbie?

Thanks!

I'm out in the snow all the time barefoot especially when I get done with work. Snows not bad. Its the ice than can be a bitch. Stick with it and your feet will eventually get used to it.

    Hey Darcey,
Don't be testing your young bare feet in the snow and extreme cold. Wait until it warms up and barefoot all spring, summer and fall. They will be tough and thick and then you can test the cold weather and snow.

It sounds to me, though, like you know your limits and enjoy abundance above endurance. So, stick those toes in the snow. Feel invigorated. the enhanced circulation which comes from hot cold therapy does begin to allow your body to react in a more natural and joyful way when your ready to walk at a distance, or unpadded on the new grounds. :) I guess it's only unpadded in the spring in the concrete/concreteesque desert. :) Plush grass isn't a luxury for all of us in the spring. So, I suggest snow therapy. Just know your limits. You;re not out to get frostbite and so you won't.

From your description of your bones aching but not your feet, I imagine you were tense about the hike or the barefeet. It is this tension which inhibits many from enjoying the barefoot benifits. Relax. Enjoy. Trust. Laugh. get tickled by the freedom. Dark, Light, hot, cold. Embrace it all now.
