There seem to be 2 schools of thought among barefooters as to how to maintain the feet.
Some folks like 'em rough and let the callouses and dirt stains build up over the years. Almost like badges of honor.
Others, like myself, love a good soak, scrub, and massage (when I'm lucky enough to have that opportunity) at the end of the day. Once a week at a minimum.
How do you like to keep yours?
P.S. I'll post a pic so you can check mine out.

Re: Rough or smooth?
Wed, October 5, 2005 - 8:27 AMI go swimming at least 3 times per week, so the foot washing just takes care of itself!

Fri, October 7, 2005 - 6:33 PMI keep mine s-m-o-o-t-h....although they have their share of callouses and hard spots, just no roughness to them.

Re: rough, for now...
Mon, November 7, 2005 - 9:35 AMNot really rough, they're smooth, but not soft, probably due to the carpet in my room. What counts it that they are thick, and hard. I built up such a huge callus that the surface could be sanded smooth yet maintain the solid protection. I have never been a fan of soaks or pampering foot care, they soften and become sensetive for the next day or so.
On the other hand, a massage with sesame oil (before a yoga session in example) does wonders for the internal mechanics of the foot. It loosens and heals without softening.

Re: Rough or smooth?
Sun, November 13, 2005 - 9:03 PMI was trying to rough them up, until they cracked. Now I'm a little kinder to them. (I'm a bit bummed.)

Re: Rough or smooth?
Tue, January 3, 2006 - 4:03 PMIf the look is not the concern here then what is exactly? I think there should be a balance between sensual and tough without sacrificing one for the other. Why turn your feet into Doc Martens and loose the other advantages of being barefoot.

Re: Rough or smooth?
Wed, January 4, 2006 - 3:54 AMRough here. Not so much a deliberate goal; more the natural result of everyday use.
Sometimes they get far too rough - I get dreadful cracking of heel callouses, and wish I was self-disciplined enough to stick to a regular maintenance program. Instead, I tend to wait until they're *really*, *really* bad, then apply intensive remedies until they're in a tolerable state again, then let it slide. *ho-hum*

Wed, February 15, 2006 - 12:26 AMSmooth, yet tough seems ideal to me.
Rough? What if I share my bed with someone new? That can be a bit unpleasant if the someone is not pro-barefoot.
What a great topic, I'm so glad I joined this tribe!
