Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 1, 2005 - 12:10 PMNo problem in California. It's the ONLY way I drive. Clutch, brake, and throttle pedals were all meant for bare feet!

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Wed, August 3, 2005 - 5:20 AMDon't know 'bout your laws, but it's certainly ok here - though the old wives' tale that it's illegal has kept popping up for as many years as I can remember.
Your "can't enter the store" raised a mischievous smile here. "Why not?", I wonder. (I go shopping barefoot regularly in fine weather - and in winter I often wear fluffy slippers in public places. But then, I cheerfully claim crazy old lady status if anyone makes a fuss.)

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 7:13 PMI heard that it's always totally legal to enter stores barefoot--it's just the store's policy. So, if you see a sign, it's the owner's decision to claim that. -

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 7:21 AMAs for as driving barefoot goes, its legal as for as I know. The Society for Barefoot Living website has good inoformation on this. Stores can set their own policy just like restaurants. I always just push the envelope as far as I can, then go along with whatever they say (usually the emergency flip-flops that I keep in the car). -

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 12:01 PMactually it's illegal in most states to be barefoot in stores, because of the possibility of injury and lawsuits, plus the health concerns of body fluid tranfer from injuries which bleed...i had this pointed explained to me while shopping barefoot.... But continue to be barefoot whenever possible til told elsewise... -
-
Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 5:24 PMSorry but that's just wrong. Please see www.barefooters.org and particularly "Bare Feet and the Dept of Health." Please don't unwittingly spread unsubstantiated myths. -

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 5:31 PMi live in maryland and the material posted on the site...only refers to food establishments...not regular businesses -
-
Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 7:53 PMAnd if it isn't a health risk in food establishments, why would it be in any OTHER establishment? I mean..... really. Also, anything that IS a law has a stuatute number.....so what's the statute number for this one? -
-
Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 8:38 PMthe heath dept which responded to a request for infomation stated they were only familiar with food establishments, this was back in 2002....they suggested contacting other organizations or local governments for more detailed information. Here in Maryland the counties tend to make more laws concerning individuals than the state at large. As a whole you may be right, but here there are a lot of strange laws. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 8:59 PMStrange laws indeed. Nonetheless, my statement stands.....any LAW has a statute number. If you are really interested, do some research and find out....most state and even county codes are available online. But please don't just accept at face value something someone told you....especially when its clear that SOMEONE ELSE (ie. the SBL website) has done EXTENSIVE research which, while not absolutely definitive, certainly provides alot of evidence that what you were told ISN'T true. Also, more important than not accepting something for yourself (frankly, you are welcome to believe whatever you choose), please don't help to perpetuate that unsubstantiated information.... -

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Mon, August 8, 2005 - 9:16 PMsorry to have gotten you all upset...but one last comment then I'll let the issuse die...you mention "But please don't just accept at face value something someone told you....especially when its clear that SOMEONE ELSE (ie. the SBL website) has done EXTENSIVE research which, while not absolutely definitive, certainly provides alot of evidence that what you were told ISN'T true." which is a contradiction. Don't trust what someone else has said, but believe a site which hasn't done by your own admittance an "not absolutely definitive" research. The information concerning Maryland is dated. I do agree though with you I need to do some research on my own.....bright blessings to you and a long life... -

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Tue, August 9, 2005 - 4:58 PMGood point but I think there is a difference. The "something someone else told YOU" was (if I understand correctly) just spoken assertions by an employee or customer in an establishment. The "something someone else told the SBL" was a documented reply on official letterhead from the government agency responsible for making determinations of such issues. I also don't need to question the validity of these replies since I sent for and received a good number of them (12 or 14) myself. Also, the person trying to prove that something DOESN'T exist is always in a more difficult position than proving an affirmative. For example.....if you document a law or regulation...you've proven YOUR point....but just because I prove that say...a STATE health dept doesn't have a law, you can always say that maybe I didn't look in the right place....or maybe a city or county or township has one instead...or a different agency....or an insurance company...etc almost ad infinitum.... (For the record, I have checked with the 3 counties local to me and none has any such regulation...and SBL members in the insurance industry have checked 5 major carriers' retail liability policies and NONE mention patron footwear.)

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Thu, April 20, 2006 - 9:14 PMI think that, basically, most people just dont like their feet. Somehow it symbolizes something undesirable. I dont understand it. There are, of course, ugly feet, feet that are all messed up from shoes or age or disease. I guess the trick is to let your feet out of the closet long before they get that way. I go barefoot almost all of the time and, like the others here, drive barefoot. When its hot out though it can be dangerous to drive my old pickup with sweaty feet sliding off the steel pedals. Life can be such a challenge.

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 10:33 PMafter working in two restaurants, two coffee houses, and being certified by the state as a food handler i can definately tell you that, at least in NJ, you MUST wear shoes in places that serve food n drink.
not the places policy, state policy. its partially for sanitation reasons (which i dont get, because my barefeet on your floor probably wont effect the quality of food) and safety. if someone spills hot food or liquid on your bare feel it will be much more dangerous then if you wore shoes. (or if you step on something)
I cant speak for the whole country, but NJ definately has codes.

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Wed, January 4, 2006 - 3:38 AM*giggle*
From time to time someone tries to tell me that, although it's not exactly illegal, it's _inconsiderate_ of me to walk into their commercial establishment with bare feet. I've had it explained to me that I *might* have stepped in something unpleasant out there in the street, and then I'd tramp it through their place...
After I've shown exaggerated dismay at the thought, I wonder musingly about the incredible sensitivity of those shod customers whose awareness of what they've been walking through is more fine-tuned than my bare-footed sense. Forgive me - but I *so* enjoy watching the confusion play over their faces.
(If they're up front about it being a company policy, I comply peaceably. It's their business, and I'll happily go spend my money where I feel more welcome... or, if I want to deal with them strongly enough, I'll accept their clearly stated terms. But I bite at attempts to guilt-trip or scare-monger.) -

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Sun, April 2, 2006 - 12:02 PMI think it has more to do with safety, for the bottom and tops of the feet.....employees of much or all of the work establishments require employees to wear shoes with toes. You will hardly see a large store or resturant facility that has employees wearing open toe shoes. It is actually an osha law. Not health dept. law.
That is so no one can claim something fell on their toe, or that they stepped on a piece of something...anyway you get the idea. They dont want to be sued...so if your employer says no open toed shoes thats the reason...now as for the public coming in barefoot..well, they are used to the old slip and fall routine..they dont want you screaming......"I stepped on a piece of glass...what are you going to do for me?i.e.$"
(I work in the safety profession, and yes it is a viable reason for this rule, unless you want to sign a release when you walk in the door.) Now as far as health and safety issues...
fungus...there is very little fungus growing on the outside of shoes. But fungus is under nail beds and in under the skin of feet of people who have say..atheletes foot.
Its not to say everyone has it, but establishments like grocery and resturants do fear that, along with body lice and crabs..
Now of course the argument is, people dont eat off the floor or sit and play on the floor so who knows what is on there anyway. I dance barefoot, but have to say...I dont think I want barefeet in resturants myself.. -

Re: illegal to drive barefoot??
Sun, April 2, 2006 - 12:07 PMsorry...I thought I dove tailed in on the driving barefoot comment...
there are many old driving laws on the books.....of course this doesnt take in account autos equipped for special or handicapped drivers..
this is some what but not totally an urban legend....
however, in allot of foreign countries it is not. It is a regional law... just like some say dont drive with sandals, (makes since, I have had my brake get stuck between my shoe and foot)
for safety, I would say shoes have more traction that a barefoot...some peddals are small and maybe there would be issues if you have soft skin that slips off the pad more easy than others...
its a factor issue.
