Im not sure why bare feet cause so much mixed reaction among people. Some hate their feet and the feet of others. Some associate bare feet with class and economic status. Others think of bare feet as crass and unstylish. In my family its the norm around the house not because we have to but because we want to. Its also associated with age. The younger the more tolerated it is. Many derive some erotic benefit from bare feet and thats ok too. Others think bare feet harken back to an earlier time when man was more connected to the earth but isnt that connection really because footwear was crude cumbersome, or unavailable? Why arent bare feet allowed in restaurants and similar places? Its not always the health codes. Maybe class again. Is there an aesthetic factor when exposing one's feet in public. Do 'ugly' feet have the same rights as 'beautiful' feet and who sets these standards? I do think that basic care and cleanliness of ones feet is important, like teeth or hair. Finally, I'm cool with bare feet whenever and wherever the wearer wants to take them but Id think twice about showing up in court that way. Would be regarded as disrespect to the court. Example of how alienated from nature an otherwise necessary and respected institution has become.

Just a reminder to all barefoot walkers. Keep your tetanus booster shots up to date. Every 10 years or so.

I cut my foot on a piece of rusty metal the other day and had to go get a few stitches and a tetanus shot.

We've had rainstorms here for the last 3 days. This morning I went out into the rain to do my morning walk. If my feet had taste buds in their soles, they would have tasted peppermint! The wet pavement made my feet sing, and I gave thanks for being alive.

Hello barefoot walkers, I'm glad to find tribe and this group.

I barefoot walk as often as possible. live in London and often walk in town and parks barefoot. My feet are like sand paper and I recently got shamed by the pool attendent when he pointed out my barefeet had created a trail of muddy prints behind me. Oops.x

Hi all,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUICK INFO:
WHEN: Tonight, 5/30/08, between 6:30 and 7 pm (probably near the end)
WHAT: Barefoot Chris on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (check your local listings, as they say)
WHY: Because Barefooting is Newsworthy?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve Hartman from CBS News visited me earlier this week to film a segment for his human interest stories.

http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/assignment_america/main500617.shtml

He came on Monday and spent an afternoon (from 5 pm to 9 pm) visiting during a Memorial Day barbecue with friends, interviewing me and filming background footage (is that a pun?). He also filmed my little one for 15 minutes showing off her shoe collection (Not my fault, I swear..she's a girly girl and people, not me, love to buy her clothes and shoes).

Then, they visited and filmed me at work on Tuesday (I got permission from my boss on Friday) around 3 pm.

Afterwards, they wanted to film me in a point-counterpoint discussion with a podiatrist, so we headed to Center City (downtown) Philadelphia to see the doctor he found. We arrived JUST at 5 (as I warned him we would in rush hour traffic) and the doctor couldn't stay. So, their next idea was to film me walking around downtown "in the city." So, I suggested the Liberty Bell and Independence Mall as a fitting location. :-)

The Bell pavilion was closed at 5 (sad...might have been interesting trying to get in) but they filmed me outside looking in and looking across the street at Independence Hall, etc.

Then, we spent about 30 minutes filming me crossing the street with pedestrian traffic and cars going by.

So, we shall see how the finished piece comes out.

~~Barefoot Chris

Hot pavement

It was an usually hot day here, about 85F degrees. Nice BF weather, for sure. But that is about the maximum ambient air temperature for walking on asphalt and cement surfaces. The trick is to keep moving. If having to wait for traffic lights at city boulevard intersections, the trick is to find a shadow spot on the pavement from the traffic light, a lamp post, or something else. That way, the soles of your feet won't be toasting on hot pavement while waiting for the light to turn green and the "Walk" signal to come "On" to permit crossing the intersection.

and sunny--perfect BF weather! In the few open
fields around here, mustard weed is starting to bloom--
a sure sign that Spring will be here soon. After my
BF walks today, my feet were happy, and began to
"sing". :-) It's amazing how a BF walk can elevate one's
mood!

Well, after reading about good barefoot memories in another topic posted here let's go to something different. Have you ever hat a bad barefoot experience, ever stept somewhere you didn't want to? Ever been in a situation where you were forced to walk in somewhere absolutely dirty, e.g. a public toilet that was disgusting? What would be the limit? Where wouldn't you be ready to step in? :-) Let's get a bit dirty :-)

Hi everyone,

I live in the most beautiful spot in the world. It's green and lush and I really don't think anyone in my wee bitty town would give a rip if I came walking along unshod. One of the wonderful things about living here is the black berry canes. From July to September, you can mosey down the road and pick them, stuffing them into your mouth as you go. The bad part about this, from a neophyte's point of view, is how do you barefoot when there are so many thorns?

My path into town has me crossing through two wooded areas with blackberry bramble snaking through the grass, totally hidden. Eventually, I will step on it. There are also two gravel roads, which don't concern me much and two public roads where I often see glass, tacks and other mean looking sharp stuff.

I'm still a tenderfoot, comfortable on asphalt but not much else. What do you recommend to increase the thickness of my soles so I can go tramping through the woods without a care? Does anyone have a timeline of how long it takes to build up that much protection?

With gratitude,
Em

Living in India for the past seven years I've been able to stay barefoot all-year-round on a 24/7 basis. My soles are incredibly tough and I'm doing my best to keep 'em that way. Travelling a lot I'm not even carrying any footwear in my backpack. My soles never get clean, but I love it that way. And I LOVE to decorate my bare feet with toerings, anklets - and whatever else comes into my mind! I've posted a bunch of new photos "Barefoot in Rajasthan". I've spent one month in the "desert state" of India (last November), doing loads of hiking, bushwalking, climbing and cycling. Enjoy my latest pics! And in case you're planning a trip to India: Please mail me! I'll give you my contact-no so that we can meet, doing some serious barefooting together!

Barefooters in Sidney or Brisbane Area?

Well guys, time's approaching and I'm looking forward to put my feet on australian soil, walk though sidney and all the coast up to Brisbane. The less shoes the better ;-) the more black soles the better...
Is anyone in the sidney or Brisbane area with barefoot experience for some hints, dos or don'ts ? Maybe for a spontaeous meeting?

Hey all,

I intend to travel a bit in Australia, preferently from Sidney to Brisbane. I am not a hardcore barefooter, but I enjoy walking and being barefoot as long as possible. How "barefoot-friendly" is Australia? Heard you often see people barefoot there. I will travel there in November, so Southeast should be warm.
Can you recommend me some "Do's" and "Don'ts" concerning barefoot walking in AUS? Have you made good or bad experiences there?
Greetings from Switzerland

Personally, I can't imagine not going barefoot whenever possible even while riding, working, and doing things not that friendly toward barefeet. I'm a little wacko about it I guess. But I notice that when I go into some businesses, like Walmart, the post office, and most places besides restaurants I get quite a few dirty looks. Why is there such a stigma or prejudice against bare feet? It's not like my feet are all grungy or gross or mis-shapen. I try to keep them clean, clipped, and presentable enough that people shouldn't mind but they do anyway. I've heard that in China feet are held in low regard because of some tradition and in many 3rd world countries people consider barefeet as a sign of poverty and lack of class. But why here? It doesn't really seem reasonable. What do you think?

Since we're all talking about how great going barefoot is why not let's stick our feet in each others faces, more or less. I mean, lets post some pics of our cool, scroungy, pretty, big, small, fat, wide, but otherwise human FEET right here where it matters. What do you think? So what if it's a little dumb or erotic or repulsive or silly or ..... If this was a car tribe wouldn't there be pics of cars?
So it's decided then. Say it loud, barefoot and proud. Stand up and be counted. No pussying out. Put your feet where your mouth is.
Show your feet and take the heat. Like a barefoot commando in the UFC. Yeah.

Barefoot conditioning?

I just discovered this site and was pleased to find other people who enjoy walking around barefoot. Particularly when I'm outside in warmer weather, I've always enjoyed walking around barefoot when I can.

For me, however, there is a problem. My feet seem to be extra sensitive and many surfaces are very painful to walk on for me. I remember an incident a couple years ago where a friend and I had decided to walk through a stream barefoot. The bottom had many little pebbles on it, and although my friend (who as far as I know rarely walks barefoot) had no problem, every step I took was very painful and I had to move very slowly. In another incident, another friend of mine had no problem running across a gravel surface that for me would've been excruciating to even walk across.

It seems to me that I have naturally thinner soles than most people due to my genetic makeup. I'm not about to give up on barefoot walking though. Is this sensitivity to rougher surfaces something that can be solved through conditioning (ie walking barefoot more often) or something I can do little to change? Can I build up thicker soles on my feet so walking on rougher surfaces eventually becomes less and less painful? I am hoping this is the case because it's certainly something I plan on doing a lot more. Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated!

Barefoot Wannabe...

Greetings barefooters!
Its about 0 degrees today in Boulder, CO, but I've determined that barefooting it is something I want and need to do. Somehow I just can't bring myself to bare my tootsies for more than about 60 seconds in this weather. We've been practicing walking barefoot in the snow a bit, but that is hardly anything in the world of barefoot.
I've done some barefoot walking in the woods, and my virgin barefoot experience including walking up a very steep, very stoney hill in the dark with a full backpack on. I was mostly too lazy to put wet shoes back on after crossing and swimming in the river at dusk...so i just huffed it. But it really hurt. Some part of me still fears the teeth and spines of the desert where I used to live( anyone around here from southern az and barefoot?) It's not so much my skin and toes that ache, but the tendons and joints when I've tried it for any length of time.

Got any tips for a newbie?

Thanks!

OK, the Northeast USA is blanketed in a good foot of snow for the most part right now. So, how many of us here actually go barefoot in the snow....and how much can you actually tolerate, time and temp-wise?

For me, I still go barefoot, but can't handle more than 5-10 minutes at a time....I've heard wonderful stories of folks who can handle 30 minutes or more....I'm amazed and jealous....

So, how about it, everyone?

Of course I had to feel the earth and water under my feet , so for about an hour I adventured around through pine/cedar needle trails, moss and mud, rocks and water. It was amazing!

Since it has been well established that driving barefoot is ok what about barefootin in businesses like restaurants, markets, etc. Is the "No Shoes, No Shirts, No Service" thing real or just another myth? If it is iilegal in some places, why is it illegal? And in the case of "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service" does that then mean you could go in butt naked below the waist as long as you have shoes and a shirt on? lol

Has anyone found good shoes for a barefoot oriented person that has extremely sensitive feet? I told my CEO that I can do much better work barefoot (or in slippers, in the office), and she told me she hopes I get a few good pairs. So now I'm known for the manager that wears slippers.

On my own time though I want to find a pair of shoes that allow me to feel the earth better, but protect my soles enough to be able to walk more than a few feet (!!!) at a time.

Height and foot (shoe) size?

Is there any correlation between height and
foot (shoe) size? I'm 5 ft. 10 in. and a men's
shoe size 8. Women's shoe sizes are two
sizes larger. Thus a men's size 8 = a woman's size 10.

Do taller people have bigger feet?
I thought about this question as I was swimming
backstroke in a pool this morning at the YMCA, and
gazing up at the blue sky and the pine trees.

Coming back to barefoot!

I started (again) this weekend!

I used to know the joy of running around barefoot a lot when I was a youngster, but "grew up" and have had my feet encased in shoes most of the time since...except when in my house. (To my credit, I think, I am usually in sandals, as I don't really like having them totally caged in...)

As part of an ever unfurling transition that I'm going through right now, I took my first conscious barefoot steps in this new world... I went out to visit my magical Godmother in the deeps of the Southern California desert and really wanted to connect consciously to the Great Mother, so I walked around barefoot, inside and out, for almost the entire trip.

First I ventured outside into her "yard", then later walked down her dirt road about a quarter mile... the hardest part was navigating around all of the big fire ants running around! (That took serious focus!) More walking around her property... and then today we took a drive further into the desert and hiked a short way into the brush to find some shade in which to sit for a spell... I wore my tennis shoes in, but as I was sitting there, I realized how disconnected I was feeling... so I took off my shoes, and voila! Connection! I hiked back out without my shoes on -- HOT HOT HOT!!! My feet got scorched and I had to stop a couple of times, fling down my shoes and hop onto them for a few seconds, but I was determined... I made it all the way back out! It was a great initiation paid for by my tender city-girl feet.

It's such a simple thing... and I loved it!
It's amazing how many buttons are being pushed... all my training on being a good, polite, productive citizen with soft, clean, pedicured, respectable feet... It's a different person who goes everywhere without shoes! ... but I think this has been a good start, and I'm excited to start toughening up my soles, and soften up my soul in the process!

So how did *you* give up the shoe?

Bare feet sinking deep
wet sand slurping around my ankles
drawing me in,
whirlpooling ocean water...
Dancing in the shimmer
the trail of moonlight
bathing me
barefeet connected
plugged in
and squishy between my toes
sand fiddlers tickling as they burrow
and tease me
through the looking glass
barefoot and joy = me

finding footing by night

In the pitch-black of a north-western forest walk, I find it much easier to keep to the path if I rely on the sensations of my souls to keep me true. I was amazed the first time that I tried to stay on track, all laced up in hiking shoes at the insistence of a visiting New Yorker. Even with her brilliant flashlight chasing off all of the night-life, we were lost.

After the incident, I began taking her out to explore the world barefoot. She had never attempted such a thing in her life, and bumped, bruised & bloodied her feet more than I could have imagined. Stubborn to the core though, she kept at it, and I began to put together a small "emergency kit" to treat her injuries. You know, including the basics: tweezers (for glass/large thorns), disinfectant of some kind, arnica (for bruise prevention), and a bandage/wrap of some kind to stop excessive bleeding..

Am I now, no longer a barefoot purist (as some believe the scuffs, scars and pain are part of the process) or turning into my mother (over-prepared and paranoid) or do you think that such a "kit" is a good companion?

It really is good to know that there are people like me out there! A friend told me of the article in the paper about Barefoot Walkers so I just had to search you all out. Do any of you live in the Bristol, UK area?

I have been going barefoot ALL summer for the last 30 (Yes, THIRTY!) or so years. For at least the last 15 of those I have only worn shoes to ride my bike. I have been self-employed for the past 22 years so I can even work barefoot(!), but even before that I was known as Barefoot Brian. I go everywhere barefoot, even though I do get some odd stares - but at least I get to talk to loads of people.

Some people think that I am crazy, I just say I am a little eccentric - and the world needs as many eccentrics as it can get!

Keep on barefootin'

There seem to be 2 schools of thought among barefooters as to how to maintain the feet.

Some folks like 'em rough and let the callouses and dirt stains build up over the years. Almost like badges of honor.

Others, like myself, love a good soak, scrub, and massage (when I'm lucky enough to have that opportunity) at the end of the day. Once a week at a minimum.

How do you like to keep yours?

P.S. I'll post a pic so you can check mine out.

The harsh reality has set in with the snow, I find myself putting on big boots and thick socks. The floors themselves reflect the time of year and bite any bare foot that dare touch them. I love the snow, but I miss the summer days running barefoot through the forest.

Hey bf walkers what are your personal favorire barefoot hikes and hiking conditons?

My personal favorite is a forest trail in a light rain, mist or fog. The rain brings out the fresh smell of the forest and the rich smell of the damp earth. I love it when the trail forms an inch or two of mud. I just love the feel of mud squishing between my toes.

Hiking?

A year ago, I read an article in Unte Reader about folks who hike with no shoes and I decided to try it.

At first, I had to be really careful where I stepped. I was afraid of everything in the path. After a while (1/2 hour), that mental process of choosing my steps settled in the back of my mind and I could start to enjoy it.

Wow! It was great, It was like I was smelling news smells with a nose I never knew I had. Clay was cold, soft, and smooth, leaves were crunch, pine needles were soft and crinkly. I loved it.

The only thing was afterward, I had some blisters on my toes where I never had before. Right on the pad and on my bigtoe pad. I didn't have a heavy backpack or anything so my arches were fine.

Anyone else do this? I highly recomend it.

I was living at a zen center a few years ago, and had a problem with boredom when I was meditating. My teacher told me to walk outside, barefoot, on pebbles. It was amazing! It brought sensations to every part of my body...and I mean EVERY part of my body. I guess it was a form of reflexology?

Anyway...I'd love to go for barefoot walks/hikes/climbs in nature. Never done it before. Are there any people in SF who are willing to let me tag along? Also, do people in the city walk barefoot? I'm a little paranoid about stepping on needles...even at the beach I worry about that.

Have you ever said, "I wish I had more hands!"
Ever think of using your feet as extra hands in
performing physical tasks? I've seen pictures of people
who can grasp a pencil between their toes and actually
write an entire letter of correspondence.
---
About all I can do is pick up a dish towel with my toes.
---
So, among all the BF walkers of this tribe, what are
your proudest accomplishments using your toes
and feet *besides* walking, jogging, or running?
Just curious! :-) We may have some geniuses in
our midst. :-)

I joined awhile back and could never figure out what to post so I'm just gonna say hi!!

I am thankful I work in a place where wearing flipflops is acceptable, at least for my position. I walk barefoot everywhere except for places that don't allow it...I love to drive barefoot too! :) So far my Reefs are the only non conventional shoes I can wear that don't give me backaches or knee pains at the end of my work day.

The problem I'm running into is that it seems since I started wearing my Reef flipflops constantly at work my heels are starting to crack. It's never happened before...I take very good care of my feet - washing them before I go to bed, putting lotion on them at least twice a day. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a different lotion to try or maybe a salve or balm?

i have come to find the true beauty of dancing barefoot.
and now, i have a hard time dancing with shoes!
the blisters on the soles of my feets are yelling at me, but the lovely feeling within is telling them to shut up.
what do you do about blisters on the bottoms of your feets?

Cold feet, fall asleep?

Now that cooler temperatures are here, can you fall asleep at night
when your feet are cold? I find that I doze off much better when
my feet are warm. If they are cold, I must warm them up first--
either by touching them to a warmer part of my body; soaking them
in warm or hot water (and drying off) before climbing into bed; or by
some other means. When my feet are warm before I sleep, they are
very warm and comfortable when I awaken in the morning. But if I am
totally exhausted (e.g., on Friday night), I can fall alseep with cold feet
and awaken with them--still cold. I'm just curious to how you BFers
handle cooler temperatures, your feet, and evening sleep. Maybe BFers
give new meaning to the old cliche, "You have cold feet!" LOL :-)

The autumn season is here. The temperatures are
cooling down, and it is much easier to walk over
paved surfaces (asphalt and cement) than when
the temperatures were super hot. Hope everyone
enjoys this time before the cold winter temperatures

I was told that you can get a ticket for this, is this True where you live? By habit I keep a pair of backup prop shoes under the front seat just in case... When I do have to drive, I always drive with liberated feet, and I actually feel that I have better control and grip on the pedals. Any thoughts about this? Of course my BF prefer petals to pedals, but I am just curious!

My feet
are neat
and show spirit's grounding
beside the river this autumn.
Sensitive and narrow,
I feel acutely the babbling brook next to which I stand.
And hesitate,
to feel the muddy squishing
of chilly mud between my toes.
A time of lovely cleansing.

An inch into the waters
and half and inch onto land,
the joyful pangs of the wet, wild flow
chill to the bone,
turning up the volume
on spirit's lively "Hello"
delivered by nature and a gift from the heart.

Birth and being birthed
United in the sands
I take the river
to my soul
and pray we come again.
Towards nature's clock
and nature's rhythms
through my soles arise my soul
and so
I give
my grateful thanks
to land and sky above.

Hello, my name is Anne, and I am new to Tribe.net, and by association, to Barefoot Walkers.

I work in public health, and spend much time communicating on a systems level within the healthcare industry. In my personal life, though, I want to cultivate habits that benefit me, my mind and body, and my larger community.

There is much to say, but the most important is something along the lines of 'namaste.' Greetings, all!

Frosty limit

This morning the temperature plunged down to
32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius/Centigrade),
and the rooftops were all covered with frost. I hopped
on my bike and went for a short BF ride. The wind chill
made being BF uncomfortable. So freezing is my limit
for BFing. How about for you?

After the rain

Last night we had a rainstorm here. This morning was
a beautiful day. The gray clouds had all gone away,
and it was sunny. I went for a walk in my neighborhood,
and it is amazing how the rain had changed everything.
Walking on grass surfaces was like walking on a
naturally lush green carpet--the ground was like a
sponge, and absorbed each step I took. Fallen leaves
were wet, and packed on the soil. The leaves cushioned
each step. Then the gravel begged to say,
"Good morning!", nudging my soles to yawn and
to come alive. And all of this without a single word or
sound uttered. Indeed--being BF makes me one with
nature, and more aware of my connection with it.

On an e-mail list to which I belong, someone made
this astute observation:

"Driving a car with shoes or boots on
is like playing a piano wearing boxing gloves!"

Leaves cover the pavement

Today was a great BF day. Fall is finally here, and the
leaves on the trees are turning into gorgeous golden
and red hues. They are also falling from the trees,
and covering the sidewalks. We just had some rainstorms
here. The sight of fallen golden leaves covering the
sidewalk, drenched by the recent rain, made for an
irresisitible BFing experience! The feeling of wet
golden leaves beneath the soles of my BF made me
smile. :-) This was one of life's simple pleasures.

Welcome!

This tribe is for all those who chose to walk barefoot--
either full-time, or part-time. If you live in a climate
that permits year-round barefooting, you are lucky.
If not, then BFing is a seasonal pursuit--and the time
from Halloween to Easter is shoddie time (when
wearing shoes is de rigueur).
---
BFing is liberating. The soles of your bare feet feel
the sensations of all the physical surfaces you walk
over, e.g., cement, asphalt, gravel, dirt (dry, hard,
packed, moist, mushy), tan bark, etc. You watch
where you walk, and obviously avoid the hazards
in your path (e.g., broken glass, chewing gum, etc.).
---
BFing increases the blood circulation in your feet,
and you will use foot muscles that are usually
"trapped" and not fully functioning because of shoes.
---
Blisters, toe cramping, and other maladies caused
by ill-fitting shoes magically go away. Your feet can
feel, breathe, and expand as they were meant to.
---
Not everyone welcomes BFing. "No shirt, no shoes,
no service" (NS3) signs appear now and then.
Avoiding confrontations means having a pair
of flip-flops handy.
---
"Aren't your feet cold?"
"Where are your shoes?"
"You aren't allowed in the store. Health code, you know."
You will hear all of these and similar comments, and
become wittily and brilliantly innovative in responding
to such sayings.
---
But even if you just kick off your shoes and socks
as the first thing when you get home, this tribe is
for you. To paraphrase Nancy Sinatra's old song,
"These boots were made for walking....", I might
modify it to "These bare feet were made for
walking"!
---
Welcome, and thanks for joining. I'm sure we can
all share insights about walking barefoot.
